Maratek Environmental recycles and processes all types of X-Ray film. But there is one category of x-ray film that we are particulary interested in recycling, and that is bulk industrial X-Ray Radiography and Non-Destructive Testing NDT film
What is Nondestructive testing NDT?
Industrial radiography has grown out of engineering, and is a major element of nondestructive testing. It is a method of inspecting materials for hidden flaws by using the ability of short X-rays and gamma rays to penetrate various materials.
Nondestructive testing or Non-destructive testing (NDT) is a wide group of analysis techniques used in science and industry to evaluate the properties of a material, component or system without causing damage. The terms Nondestructive examination (NDE), Nondestructive inspection (NDI), and Nondestructive evaluation (NDE) are also commonly used to describe this technology.
Because NDT does not permanently alter the article being inspected, it is a highly valuable technique that can save both money and time in product evaluation, troubleshooting, and research. Common NDT methods include ultrasonic, magnetic-particle, liquid penetrant, radiographic, remote visual inspection (RVI), eddy-current testing, and low coherence interferometry. NDT is commonly used in forensic engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, civil engineering, systems engineering, aeronautical engineering, medicine, and art.
NDT is used in a variety of settings that covers a wide range of industrial activity, with new NDT methods and applications, being continuously developed. NDT services are not only integrated with Asset Integrity Management (AIM) solutions, but also with Material Testing laboratories and seamlessly fit into Supply Chain services.
X-Ray film is not always produced from this process, but on many occasions records from NDT have to be kept for certain periods. An industry such as pipeline nondestructive testing does create a considerable amount of X-ray film that should be properly destroyed for good environmental reasons as opposed to adding x-ray film into a normal waste stream.
